S4 and Constable Dan

Today we had a special guest from the S4 program.  Constable Dan came to talk to us about the tools he uses in his daily work as a member of the Calgary Police Service.  He explained the way he uses his radio, flashlight, handcuffs etc. but he instilled the importance of using his senses:  hearing, observing, listening and speaking.  We can all use these senses to help us be successful during our day.  We use our brains to think through situations and solve our problems. We use our heart to feel and show the characteristics of the virtues we have been studying - like empathy, kindness, integrity, respect.

Constable Dan read "Llama Llama Misses Mama" and we talked about situations that make us feel angry, sad, or frustrated.

Finally, we built a  class tool belt of our own that included strategies we can use to calm ourselves during times of frustration.  Some examples included:

Talk with my friend,  listen to music,  walk away, go to a quiet space, go for a drink, take a deep breath, draw, excercise, read a book and many more.

Please take some time to talk to your child about the strategies he/she chooses to use when frustrated or upset.  Identifying alternatives for at home, and at school, can ensure success throughout the day.
